The Story of Safety Porn
It was during an OSHA training years ago that the founder of safety porn had a revelation. As he sat in an OSHA training class listening to the instructor, he realized that the instructor spoke about safety with the same excitement and wonder as some would speak about porn. He thought to himself, “How could I get others to be this excited about safety?”
A few years later, the same man was conducting an on-site training for construction workers on the topic of material handling safety. During the training, he noticed that some of the attendees seemed very distracted by what they saw on someone’s phone. They were definitely more interested in that phone than what he was saying. When he asked them what they were looking at, they showed him. To his surprise, they were looking at porn. He looked at them and said, “I wish that you all would be as excited about safety as you are about that porn.” Later that night he thought to himself, “what if I started a company that would promote safety in a way that would stick in people’s minds?” Something that people would talk about all the time, something that would get people as excited about safety as they are about porn! And in that moment, safety porn was born!
Safety is no joke, but we can play with it a bit to make it stick!
